AMD has added a new CPU to its Athlon family today in the form of a Black Edition desktop part. The X2 7850 BE comes in as an affordable option at just under $70, but will get you a very decent 2.8GHz dual-core unit that’s actually a rebadged 65nm Phenom X4 processor with two cores disabled. The architecture choice also means it supports HyperTransport 3 technology and has 1MB of L2 cache (512KB per core) and 2MB of shared L3 cache. This was the second piece of low-cost hardware AMD announced yesterday, along with the Radeon HD 4770 graphics card. Glancing over several performance reviews, you can see the company has put together a CPU and GPU pair that offer modest performance for a pretty low price tag. Clearly, they are responding to current market conditions and hope to offer the best value option in the mainstream sector – something they largely lost out on when Intel began pushing out Core 2 and later dual-core Celerons.

In exchange for using consumer data to build the Collective Intelligence database, Panda decided to offer the Panda Cloud Antivirus for free, said Pedro Bustamante, senior research adviser at Panda Security.
The new program reportedly takes up around 50 MB on the hard drive and eats around 17 MB of RAM when in use. That compares well against the industry average that Panda provided of 60 MB, and Bustamante said that they're aiming for 12 MB of RAM when in use.Cloud computing may make sense from a system resources point of view, but what happens to system security when the computer isn't connected to the Internet? "The model we've implemented is to break down the traditional antivirus to client and server, so when the user is not connected they keep a local cache copy of Collective Intelligence, including detections for what Collective Intelligence sees is spreading through the community," he said.
Panda Cloud Antivirus is for Windows XP and Windows Vista, with planned support for Windows 7 when it's released. Bustamante added that it will stay in beta as it's being accepted by users, although they hope it will leave beta by the end of this summer.

On the server side, SharePoint Server 2007 has had security and performance tweaks, including better support for newer versions of the Firefox browser.
Microsoft also promises improved performance and stability in Outlook, better charting functionality in Excel, and more control over the appearance of SmartArt graphics.
Open victory
The ODF Alliance welcomed the support of OpenDocument Format (ODF) in SP2, with its managing director, Marino Marcich, saying, "This is a victory for ODF, as it signifies a reversal of course by Microsoft from their decision to shun the format during the initial launch of Office 2007."
Jane Liles, group program manager for Office Sustained Engineering at Microsoft, said, "Our customers have complex needs that no single vendor can address, so we need to be collaborative with the rest of the industry and make our products as interoperable as possible. At Microsoft, our approach includes open protocols, APIs and built-in support for the widest set of document formats in the industry."
SP2 also includes the Open XML Format External File Converter, which allows developers to make any third-party document format a "first-class citizen" in Office, allowing Office to support most government-preferred formats.
Government compatibility
Seventeen national and eight provincial governments have endorsed ODF for document exchange, the latest being the UK government, which, under the 'Open Source, Open Standards and Re-Use: Government Action Plan' indicated it will support the use of ODF and work to ensure that government information is available in open formats.
"The key test will be whether Microsoft's support for ODF plays well with other ODF-supporting software," warned Marcich. "Governments will want to further evaluate the support for ODF provided by Microsoft and whether it sufficiently meets their needs for greater openness and interoperability."
SP2 also speeds up Outlook, with the upgrade offering a 26 per cent speed boost compared to its predecessor on a set of common e-mail tasks. It's even faster (35 per cent) with larger mailboxes.

Everyone knows 3D movies are the next big thing in the drive to prevent film piracy, so it's no surprise to see the hardware needed for their production becoming simpler and cheaper.
Panasonic has just revealed it plans to market a professional high-definition 3D production system consisting of a camera with two lenses and a 3D HD TV plasma screen.
Cutting camera costs
The twin-lens approach means there will no longer be a need for two separate cameras to shoot the left- and right-eye images needed for the stereoscopic effect.
That reduces both the cost of purchasing the hardware and the time needed for setting up the equipment and subsequent film editing.
What about the specs?
Panasonic says it will initially show the system at trade exhibitions and look to sell it later this year.
Now, if only they can do something about price-gouging cinemas with the cheek to charge extra for 3D glasses.

3's UK CEO, Kevin Russell, has revealed that the company is working on a new version of the Skypephone, which will be delivered later this year.
Speculation has been growing in recent weeks over a new version of the Skypephone, with the original S1 and newer S2 being sold out in recent weeks.
But Russell said at a recent 3 round table discussion: "The next Skypephone will be coming Q4 [2009] at the latest, which is an exciting proposition."
He mentioned the new phone in association with the new Skype deal 3 has announced, where the company will give the customer unlimited Skype use from their handset for the price of a £1.99 SIM card, with no expiry or top ups needed.
Bringing back value
As part of the deal, 3 hopes to bring out a wide range of lower cost 'value' handsets which will be appealing to the 'mass market'.
The mention of the new Skypephone came after Russell was quizzed on whether allowing consumers to bring their own handsets to the Skype deal would mean the end of the Skypephone line.
But Russell said, in addition to revealing about the new handset: "The best Skype experience will still be on a 3 Skypephone or the INQ1, as for heavy users of Skype, they just work superbly."
He also said that the company is not looking at high end propositions for this market, ie the likes of Android or the iPhone, as the company preferred to concentrate on the lower end of the market.
"If we could have the iPhone, we would range the iPhone, but we wouldn't predicate out internet strategy around that.
"It's a great product, but our focus is on the mass market, not £45 per month contracts. We prefer to offer £60-£80 pre-pay handsets."

AMD has formally released its new Phenom II X4 Black Edition chip. Clocked at 3.2GHz, AMD is once again aiming to undercut Intel on price with its $245 price point and hoping to target enthusiasts who like to tweak.
The new chip goes up against the $270 Core 2 Quad 2.83GHz and the $289 Core i7920 2.66 Ghz.
With an unlocked multiplier, overclockability is the real story of this chip, with some reports citing early overclocking attempts that have hit the 6.7GHz barrier. But there are also other suggestions across the web that it's possible to get the 45nm chip to 7GHz. At CES in January, AMD demonstrated its previous flagship X4 940 at 6.5 GHz.
With a total cache of 8MB (2MB of L2 and 6MB of shared L3), the new processor is designed for AM3 motherboards and DDR3 memory, but it's backwards compatible with AM2+ and DDR2.
AMD has also released its OverDrive 3.0 software which enables you to fiddle with speed and voltages across your processor, memory and HyperTransport.
AMD also announced the $225 Phenom II X4 945 (clocked at 3.0 GHz like the Phenom II X4 940). Once again there's AM3 and DDR3 support.
